Hollywood Family Advocates for Traffic Light After Fatal Motorcycle Crash
HOLLYWOOD, FL – A Hollywood family is calling for a traffic light at N. 21st Avenue and Garfield Street, following the death of 24-year-old Colt William Firth nearly three weeks ago.
Firth died when a vehicle allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign on Garfield Street, colliding with his motorcycle as he traveled northbound on N. 21st Avenue. The Hollywood Police Department reported that the investigation is ongoing, awaiting a medical examiner’s report, and has classified the incident as a non-criminal traffic crash.
Witnesses reported seeing multiple vehicles disregard the stop signs at this intersection, prompting concerns about safety. Firth’s family argues that current stop signs are inadequate, emphasizing that an installed traffic light could have averted his death.
His mother, Michele Firth, expressed her grief, while his sister, Erica Marra, described him as compassionate. Marra stated, “Anything to help save another person’s life so a family doesn’t have to go through this grief or this despair of a devastating incident.”
To support their cause, the family has initiated an online petition that has garnered over 600 signatures, urging city officials to consider safety improvements. A city spokesperson confirmed that officials are reviewing the feasibility of a traffic study for the intersection.
