MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A 76-year-old man died in a multi-vehicle crash on I-90 Westbound near Highway 12 in Sauk County on Monday.
According to the Wisconsin State Patrol Southwest Region DeForest Post, the incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m.
Officials reported that an SUV and a pickup truck colliding in the eastbound lanes caused the pickup truck to cross the median, striking two semi trucks in the westbound lanes.
The pickup truck driver, identified as Terry R. Nydegger from Springfield, Illinois, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nydegger served as the Chief of Police for the New Berlin Police Department in Sangamon County, Illinois.
Authorities confirmed the driver of the SUV fled the scene; the incident is under investigation as a hit-and-run.
One semi truck driver suffered minor injuries. All westbound lanes of I-90 were closed for approximately six hours.
Responding agencies included the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, Sauk County Coroner’s Office, Lake Delton Police Department, and others.
