Fargo Area Reports Surge in Fatal Motorcycle Crashes
FARGO — Three fatal motorcycle crashes in the Fargo area this week have contributed to a total of at least nine fatalities statewide in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s total.
Authorities reported a crash on June 29 along Interstate 94 near West Fargo, a collision on South University Drive in Fargo on June 26, and another incident on June 24 on Interstate 29. Each of these crashes resulted in confirmed fatalities.
Emergency response teams, including local police and medical aid, were dispatched to each scene. Investigation into the causes of these accidents is ongoing. Lane closures were enacted temporarily to facilitate emergency response efforts.
According to state statistics, motorcycle fatalities fluctuated in the past decade, with previous lows recorded in 2015 and 2021, both at eight fatalities. In contrast, North Dakota saw its highest count of 17 fatalities in 2020.
Motorcycle safety organizations emphasize the importance of helmet use and rider training to mitigate risks. Lonnie Bertsch, Executive Director of ABATE of North Dakota, noted the increasing number of motorcyclists on the road due to rising gasoline prices.
While motorcycle safety training is not mandated in North Dakota, it is encouraged as a measure to enhance rider safety. Authorities continue to remind motorists to remain vigilant for motorcyclists, particularly as riding season gains momentum.
