Fred the Barber Returns to Cutting Hair After Triumphing Over Years of Recovery from Devastating Motorcycle Accident.

Crystal River Barber Returns to Work After Motorcycle Injury

Fred Sparkman, known as “the Barber,” has resumed cutting hair at Precision Barber and Salon Cuts in Crystal River after a severe motorcycle accident on August 14, 2020.

Sparkman, who sustained a traumatic brain injury in the crash, has spent nearly three years in recovery. Authorities reported he was airlifted after the accident near Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and later received specialized care in Florida.

Despite ongoing therapy and enduring short-term memory loss, Sparkman has resumed his lifelong passion for barbering. “It came back naturally to me,” he said.

Sparkman previously operated his own shop on State Road 44 but retired in April 2021 due to his injuries. “I’m very thankful for the 42 years that I have had in Crystal River cutting hair,” he posted on social media after his last day.

In May 2022, he faced another personal tragedy with the loss of his son, Moe, who died from ALS.

Sparkman joined Precision Barber and Salon Cuts about eight months ago. “He’s the man, the myth, and the legend,” said owner Bridgette, praising his skills.

For appointments, Fred Sparkman can be reached at 352-228-4009, located at 4314 N. Suncoast Blvd., Unit C, Crystal River.
