WAILUKU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui Police Chief Tivoli Faaumu acknowledged leaving the scene of a minor accident at Kaahumanu Shopping Center on Nov. 7.
The incident involved Faaumu’s white Ford pickup truck colliding with a parked motorcycle. The owner, a security guard at the shopping center, discovered damage to his bike four hours later.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows Faaumu braking after the collision and looking back before departing. Authorities confirmed the estimated damage to the vehicles is less than $3,000.
The Maui Police Department stated that Faaumu remains on regular duty, and no citations were issued because the incident occurred on private property.
Maui Mayor Mike Victorino declined to comment, stating he wants the investigation to proceed. The bike’s owner expressed disbelief over Faaumu’s claim of not realizing the impact, calling for an apology.
Traffic attorney Dave Fanelli noted that hitting a parked vehicle could result in a $100 fine, emphasizing the importance of notifying the owner or leaving a note if the driver cannot locate them.
The incident remains under investigation by the Maui Police Department.
