BYRON, MN (KROC-AM News)—A Byron man faces charges following a motorcycle crash that injured a passenger on Saturday.
The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. near Valleyhigh Rd NW and County Rd 3 NW, northeast of Byron. Authorities identified the driver as 34-year-old Johny Vernon Kanestadt.
According to the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office, Kanestadt lost control of the motorcycle while navigating a turn. The passenger sustained cuts, abrasions, and a head injury, and was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
Impairment Suspected
Deputies detected a smell of alcohol during their interaction with Kanestadt. He admitted to smoking marijuana an hour prior but denied consuming alcohol. Kanestadt underwent field sobriety tests, which indicated intoxication.
A breath test recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.06. He was arrested and taken to the Olmsted County Jail, where a blood sample was also collected.
Previous Offenses
Records show Kanestadt was convicted of DWI in August 2022 and has had a suspended license since July 2022. He also lacked a motorcycle endorsement at the time of the crash.
Charges Filed
Kanestadt is charged with gross misdemeanor counts of criminal vehicular operation, ignition interlock violation, and alcohol/controlled substance driving violations, among other charges. He has been released without bail and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
