Motorcycle Crashes Rise on Beartooth Highway, Prompting Caution from Montana and Wyoming Troopers.

MONTANA/WYOMING — Motorcycle crashes are rising this summer on Beartooth Highway and Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, prompting warnings from law enforcement.

Authorities report six motorcycle crashes in 2023 in Wyoming between U.S. Highway 212 and Wyoming Highway 296, surpassing half of the previous yearly record of 10. In a statement, Public Information Officer Aaron Brown noted, “We’re already at six and we’re halfway through the year.”

The Wyoming Highway Patrol also tallied 16 statewide traffic fatalities in July, anticipating increased traffic due to the upcoming Sturgis motorcycle rally. In Montana, Troopers confirmed two motorcycle crashes near Cooke City but reported no incidents on the Beartooth Highway between Red Lodge and the state line.

Sgt. Harris Wilson of the Montana Highway Patrol highlighted common causes for crashes, including excessive speed on tight curves and distraction from the scenic views. “With how curvy that road is… it can become dangerous very quickly,” Wilson stated.

The Beartooth Highway, renowned for its stunning vistas, features steep grades and sharp switchbacks. Authorities caution riders about rapidly changing weather conditions, especially at elevations near 11,000 feet. “It might be 100 degrees down below, but when you get to the pass, you could be in the 50s or colder,” Wilson added.

As the summer progresses, agencies anticipate continued heavy traffic and a potential increase in crash numbers. Both the Montana Highway Patrol and Wyoming Highway Patrol advise riders to slow down on curves, stay focused, and remain vigilant for wildlife and other vehicles on the road.
