Motorcycle Crashes Surge in Wyoming Amid Increasing Rider Numbers.

WAPITI, WYO. — Motorcycle crashes in northern Wyoming have surged this summer, with one recent incident resulting in a fatality.

On August 8, 2026, a collision near Wapiti on Highway 14/16/20 involved a Ford pickup crossing the center line and striking two oncoming motorcycles. Authorities reported one death, two serious injuries, and several others transported to local hospitals.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, there have been about 12 to 15 motorcycle crashes this year on scenic highways, double the typical average. Senior Public Relations Specialist Aaron Brown noted that the state has recorded a higher number of fatalities, with four motorcycle deaths occurring within five days from August 8 to August 13.

Through mid-August, the state recorded approximately 90 motorcycle deaths since 2022. August is often the deadliest month, with 22 fatalities historically. Brown emphasized that distracted driving has become a significant factor, accounting for 25% of all fatal crashes in 2026.

Witnesses reported that the recent crash near Wapiti occurred close to a previous fatal incident in 2016. The Wyoming Highway Patrol is actively investigating the recent collisions, urging riders to remain vigilant on challenging roads.

Authorities said lane closures may occur as emergency services respond to the increase in motorcycle-related incidents. Motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving in these popular tourist areas.
