COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. — A motorcyclist died in a crash on I-95 Tuesday evening, according to Virginia State Police.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. near the 54 mile-marker, close to Temple Avenue.
Authorities said the motorcyclist, later identified as 39-year-old Desmond Nichols of Petersburg, was traveling at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass a pickup truck on the shoulder.
The motorcycle struck the truck, causing Nichols to be ejected. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The motorcycle continued along the interstate and subsequently collided with an unoccupied SUV. No other injuries were reported.
Emergency services responded to the scene, and an investigation is ongoing. Virginia State Police are handling the case.
