Two Fatal Motorcycle Crashes Reported Near Newark on May 5
Newark, DE – Two motorcyclists died in separate crashes on May 5, prompting officials to urge motorists to remain vigilant while driving.
According to Delaware State Police, the first crash occurred at 6 p.m. on Christiana Road near Harmony Road. Jared Thompson, 34, was riding eastbound when he collided with an Audi Q5 turning left into McIntosh Plaza. Thompson was pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital. The Audi driver, a 37-year-old man from Bear, sustained no injuries.
The second fatal crash happened at 7:20 p.m. on Churchmans Road, approximately 2 miles from the first incident. Keith Stewart, 29, of Wilmington, was riding west when he struck a Nissan Rogue turning from Center Point Plaza. Preliminary investigations indicate Stewart was speeding and failed to stop at a red light. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The drivers of both vehicles were unharmed.
So far this year, four motorcyclists have died on Delaware roads, compared to 17 fatalities last year. State officials are reminding drivers to watch for motorcyclists, especially when turning or changing lanes. Motorcyclists are encouraged to use headlights, wear protective gear, and avoid blind spots.
