Sioux Falls crash ignites debate over traffic light installations and public safety measures.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – On May 22, loved ones gathered to remember Nick Schramm, 24, and RaeAnn Huber, 22, who were killed in a motorcycle crash on Marion Road.

The crash occurred on Saturday, May 20, when the couple was struck by a vehicle at an uncontrolled intersection. Authorities have confirmed the incident is under investigation.

Witnesses reported that this area, on the northwest side of Sioux Falls, is rapidly developing, with the construction of new homes and businesses.

Community members have expressed concerns about the safety of the intersection at Marion Road and Vision Drive, where the couple lost their lives. Only two intersections along this stretch lack traffic control, prompting discussions about potential safety measures.

According to Sioux Falls City Engineer Andy Berg, the city assesses traffic flow, pedestrian volume, and accident statistics to determine the need for a traffic signal. Currently, the area does not meet the necessary criteria for installation.

Berg explained that traffic signals are evaluated based on a five-year capital plan, and factors like new businesses could influence future assessments. He acknowledged that while controlled intersections may reduce accident severity, they cannot eliminate all driver errors.

The families of the victims believe increased awareness of motorcyclists and enhanced safety measures are essential to prevent future tragedies.
