STURGIS, S.D. (KOTA) – A 46-year-old woman from Sioux Falls was killed in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 14A Thursday afternoon.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. near mile marker 50, about two miles south of Sturgis, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the woman was riding a 2013 Suzuki Gladius 650 eastbound when a westbound 2013 Victory Jackpot lost control, crossed the centerline, and collided with her motorcycle.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene; her name has not been released pending family notification. The other rider, a 77-year-old man from Wrentham, Massachusetts, sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital in Sturgis.

Both riders were wearing helmets at the time of the crash, according to officials. Eastbound lanes of Highway 14A were closed for about an hour for emergency response and investigation.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
