DEADWOOD, S.D. (KOTA) – Two Colorado motorcyclists died Thursday evening after a collision on U.S. Highway 14A near Deadwood.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:27 p.m. near mile marker 47, about four miles east of Deadwood. The victims, a 59-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman from Frederick, were riding a 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the motorcycle crossed the centerline while negotiating a curve and collided with a westbound 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 15-year-old girl from Sturgis.
Both riders on the motorcycle succumbed to their injuries, and officials reported that neither was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
The Jeep driver was unharmed; however, a 67-year-old passenger from Lead sustained minor injuries, while another passenger did not require medical attention.
Authorities closed Highway 14A for approximately three hours to allow for emergency response and investigation of the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, and all released information is considered preliminary.
