Both lanes of U.S. 41 south of Calumet were closed Wednesday following a fatal crash involving two motorcycles and an SUV in Houghton County.
According to Michigan State Police, the incident occurred at 12:30 p.m. near Golf Course Road in Osceola Township. A 45-year-old woman driving southbound in an SUV reportedly swerved into the northbound lane to avoid a pickup that had stopped to turn left. This maneuver resulted in a collision with two motorcycles traveling northbound.
The motorcyclists, a 65-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, both from South Carolina, died at the scene. The SUV driver and two child passengers received evaluation on-site but were released without serious injuries.
In response to the accident, both lanes of U.S. 41 were closed, redirecting traffic through nearby roads. MSP stated that the investigation is ongoing and any findings will be forwarded to the Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office for review, as per standard protocol.
Emergency responders included MSP, Mercy EMS, Calumet Township Fire and Rescue, and Houghton County Sheriff’s Office. This incident marks the second motorcycle fatality locally in less than a week, following a separate accident in Grant Township that claimed the life of a 72-year-old man from Wisconsin.
