OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Ryan Hay, co-founder of Omaha Bike Week, was killed early Thursday after a driver allegedly under the influence struck his motorcycle.
At approximately 2:41 a.m., police said Bailey Burr, 31, failed to yield during a left turn on 144th Street, colliding with Hay’s motorcycle. Hay was ejected from the bike and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Burr faces charges of motor vehicle homicide and DUI.
Hay and co-founder Michael Allen introduced Omaha Bike Week in 2024, inviting local riders to celebrate motorcycling. The event gained significant traction on social media.
Witnesses described Hay as a dedicated community member. Derek Slechta, a local business owner, remembered him as someone who was always willing to help others.
In tribute, Hay’s motorcycle was displayed outside the event venue. Proceeds from Omaha Bike Week activities, including a raffle and T-shirt sales, will support his family.
Remaining events, such as a car night and car show on Saturday, are being held in Hay’s memory, according to Allen.
This incident adds to a disturbing trend of fatal drunk driving crashes in Omaha. Chris Wagner, executive director of Project Extra Mile, noted that nearly 70 deaths from alcohol-related crashes occur in Nebraska annually, emphasizing the need for stronger policy measures.
