Four Killed, 80 Injured in Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Crashes

STURGIS, S.D. — Four fatalities and 80 injuries were reported across 66 crashes during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from August 9 to August 18, 2025, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The Highway Patrol, which compiled data exclusively from its investigations, confirmed the fatalities involved motorcyclists aged 23 to 60. The incidents spanned various locations, with multiple crashes occurring on curves known for their difficulty.

One crash near Mount Rushmore involved a 58-year-old man who lost control on a curve, resulting in collisions with three other motorcycles. Another incident in the southern Black Hills claimed the life of a 60-year-old man under similar circumstances. A different crash near Rapid City resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man when a pickup turned in front of his motorcycle. The fourth fatality occurred during a police pursuit involving a 28-year-old man near Sturgis.

Emergency responders reported that 27 of the 66 injury crashes occurred in the immediate Sturgis area, while the remainder were in nearby regions. The number of injury crashes this year marked an increase compared to 35 reported in 2023.

Authorities did not disclose the names of the deceased pending family notification. The South Dakota Highway Patrol will continue to monitor road safety and investigate additional incidents from the event.
