Arkansas Man Seriously Injured in Motorcycle Accident Due to Pothole on I-40 in Humphreys County.

A motorcycle accident involving a 45-year-old man occurred Saturday night on I-40 East, resulting in serious injuries.

The crash took place around 8:54 p.m., when the rider, Gordon Guffy, hit a pothole, causing him to lose control of his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Emergency responders transported Guffy by helicopter to Skyline Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Authorities reported that Guffy sustained severe head trauma, including a massive concussion and a brain bleed, along with multiple broken ribs and other injuries. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with others directing traffic while providing comfort to Guffy until help arrived.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) acknowledged awareness of the pothole issue in the area, noting that crews had previously patched the road. “We’ve been out there a few times. Unfortunately, it just got a lot worse,” said Rebekah Hammonds, a TDOT representative.

Following the accident, TDOT crews completed milling work on the road and plan to repave by Wednesday. Guffy’s family is advocating for improved road maintenance statewide, emphasizing the need for immediate action to prevent similar accidents.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
