Albuquerque – A New Year’s Eve crash in Albuquerque resulted in one fatality and two injuries.
On December 31, 2025, at approximately 8:36 PM, Albuquerque Police Department (APD) officers responded to a two-vehicle collision at Indian School Rd NE and Wyoming Blvd. The incident involved a silver Honda, driven by 24-year-old Joshua Montoya, and a white Lincoln.
According to authorities, Montoya admitted to consuming alcohol before the crash, and officers noted the odor of alcohol at the scene. Both drivers were transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) with non-life-threatening injuries; however, a passenger in the Lincoln was pronounced dead at the scene.
At UNMH, officers observed Montoya displaying bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and a strong alcohol odor. He declined to provide additional statements after being read his Miranda rights. A portable breath test indicated Montoya had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.121, exceeding the legal limit of .08 in New Mexico.
Montoya was arrested on charges of Homicide by Vehicle (DUI) and Great Bodily Harm by Vehicle (DUI). He refused implied consent blood testing, prompting a search warrant for a blood draw, which was executed at UNMH.
The driver of the white Lincoln sustained a broken nose from the collision. Preliminary investigation by APD indicates the Lincoln was southbound on Wyoming Blvd attempting a left turn onto Indian School Rd when it was struck by the northbound Honda, which was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed.
Emergency responders found one vehicle on fire and attended to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
