RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – One motorcyclist was killed and seven others injured in crashes during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on Saturday, August 8, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 4:41 p.m. on U.S. Highway 85 near mile marker 35. A 72-year-old man lost control of his 2003 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide while braking for another motorcycle and was thrown from the bike, later succumbing to his injuries.
In addition to the fatality, seven injury crashes were reported. These incidents included riders losing control, collisions with other vehicles, and one crash caused by a failed rear tire.
One serious injury involved a 67-year-old rider who was not wearing a helmet and was flown to Rapid City after losing control on N. Rochford Road.
Another injury occurred when a westbound vehicle crossed the centerline on U.S. Highway 14A. Additional crashes were documented on U.S. Highway 14A, S.D. Highway 44, U.S. Highway 16, and near Interstate 90 Exit 59.
From 6:00 a.m. Saturday to 6:00 a.m. Sunday, the South Dakota Highway Patrol reported 21 DUI arrests, 32 misdemeanor drug arrests, and 14 felony drug arrests. Officers also made 37 custodial arrests, issued 260 citations, and provided 713 warnings.
