Maine Riders and Drivers Urged to Stay Alert as Motorcycle Season Begins.

Augusta, Maine — The Maine Department of Transportation reported three fatal motorcycle crashes in 2026 so far, compared to 24 deaths in 2025.

Officials are urging drivers and motorcyclists to remain alert to prevent additional fatalities. Recommended safety measures include stricter checks of blind spots by drivers, and helmet use and increased visibility for motorcyclists. Authorities also stress the importance of avoiding impaired riding.

Several motorcycle safety awareness rides are scheduled throughout Maine this month and next, focused on promoting safer riding practices and honoring victims of motorcycle crashes.

One of the notable events is the 4th Doug Burnell Memorial Bike Ride, taking place on July 11 at the Thomas College Ice Vault. Organizers state the ride aims to foster community and remembrance as summer travel peaks. Kickstands will go up at 10:30 a.m.

More information can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
