Motorcyclist Dies in Crash on Beartooth Highway; Authorities Investigating
A fatal motorcycle accident occurred on U.S. 212, the Beartooth Highway, on July 28, 2026, resulting in the death of one individual.
The crash took place near mile marker 21, between the Top of the World Store and Island Lake Campground. Emergency responders, including the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), First Flight of Wyoming, and Red Lodge Fire Rescue, were dispatched to the scene.
According to WHP spokesman Aaron Brown, the incident marks the seventh motorcycle accident on the Beartooth Highway and Chief Joseph Scenic Highway this month. Authorities confirmed that there are no additional injuries reported at this time.
Preliminary findings suggest the motorcyclist may have experienced either a medical emergency or operator inattention. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the precise cause of the crash.
This year has seen a concerning increase in motorcycle accidents, particularly in July, which is tied for the worst year on record for these highways. In total, WHP troopers have responded to at least seven confirmed motorcycle incidents on these roads this month alone, with reports of up to 18 crashes across both highways when considering those not confirmed by WHP.
Brown emphasized the need for rider awareness, especially with the impending 86th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally beginning August 7, 2026, which could increase motorcycle traffic on these routes.
In a separate incident, a 20-year-old male motorcyclist died in Casper on Thursday morning, with the cause of that accident also under investigation.
WHP urges all drivers and motorcyclists to remain vigilant and cautious on the roads.
