Motorcycle Crashes Surge on Wyoming Scenic Highways
Multiple motorcycle accidents have prompted urgent warnings from law enforcement in northwest Wyoming, with a marked increase in incidents reported along Wyoming 296 and U.S. 212 in July.
Authorities from the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) are investigating the rise in motorcycle crashes, with at least 13 incidents logged recently. Five motorcycle crashes occurred on the Beartooth Highway this month alone, with one involving serious injuries but no fatalities.
Emergency response teams, including the Park County Fire District 2, have highlighted the dangerous conditions on these winding mountain passes. “These roads are beautiful but unpredictable,” said Jerry Parker, administrator of the district.
Factors contributing to the crashes include lane misuse on sharp curves and the absence of shoulders along these highways. Weather conditions, including frequent thunderstorms, are also complicating matters.
As thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts prepare for the upcoming Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, agencies are urging riders to exercise caution. Motorcyclists are advised to slow down in curves, avoid distracted riding, and assess their skill levels.
“Ride within your skills and slow down,” Brown stated. “It’s not a place you want to be crashing out on.”
