WAPITI, WYO. — A motorcycle crash near Wapiti on Wednesday killed one person and injured several others, highlighting a surge in motorcycle fatalities in northern Wyoming.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 2:41 p.m. on Highway 14/16/20 when a Ford pickup crossed the center line and collided with two oncoming motorcycles. Two additional motorcycles crashed as a result of the initial collision.
One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, and two others sustained serious injuries. Several other riders were transported to the hospital for treatment, though their conditions have not been specified.
Wyoming Highway Patrol Senior Public Relations Specialist Aaron Brown confirmed that four motorcycle deaths were recorded across the state from August 8 through August 13, increasing concern over rising fatality rates. As of mid-July, seven motorcycle deaths had already been reported, with an additional five or six occurring since late July.
Brown noted that 90 motorcycle fatalities have been recorded in Wyoming since 2022, with August historically being the deadliest month. Specifically, 22 of those deaths occurred in this month over the past two years, with a troubling increase observed this year.
In 2026 alone, troopers have responded to an estimated 12 to 15 motorcycle crashes on scenic highways, virtually doubling the seasonal average of 6 to 7 incidents.
Brown attributed the rise in crashes to increased motorcycle traffic, particularly during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and cited distracted driving as a contributing factor in 40% of all vehicle accidents in July. He urges all drivers and riders to prioritize safety on the roads.
