Motorcycle crashes surge in Wyoming amidst increase in ridership.

WAPITI, WYO. — A motorcycle crash near Wapiti on August 13 resulted in one death and multiple serious injuries.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, a Ford pickup truck drifted into oncoming traffic on Highway 14/16/20, colliding with two motorcycles. The incident resulted in one fatality and left two individuals with serious injuries, with several others transported for medical care.

Troopers indicated that Wyoming has experienced a surge in motorcycle crashes this summer, particularly along popular routes like U.S. 212 and the Beartooth Highway. Senior Public Relations Specialist Aaron Brown noted that the state recorded four motorcycle deaths in just five days, from August 8 through August 13.

Brown stated that up to mid-July, there had been approximately seven motorcycle fatalities. This figure has increased significantly since then, with estimates showing a total of 90 motorcycle deaths since 2022. Historically, August is the deadliest month for motorcycle incidents, accounting for 22 fatalities in that timeframe.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol has reported around 12 to 15 motorcycle crashes in 2023, far exceeding the average of 6 to 7 for the entire season. The agency observed that distracted driving has become a notable factor, involved in 25% of fatal crashes this year.

Emergency services responded promptly to the scene of the August 13 crash, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities reaffirm that heightened awareness and safety measures are essential for all road users as traffic increases during peak motorcycle seasons.
