Recent motorcycle crashes in central Kentucky raise serious road safety concerns.

Motorcycle Crashes Surge in Lexington as Riding Season Begins

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Local News Wire) – Lexington has reported at least six motorcycle crashes in the past month, marking a concerning start to the riding season.

According to the Kentucky State Police, last year saw over 1,500 motorcycle-related crashes in the state, resulting in 1,072 injuries and 111 fatalities. AAA Blue Grass spokesperson Lori Weaver-Hawkins indicated that these figures do not include accidents involving mopeds or scooters.

As warmer weather approaches, the number of motorcycles on the road is expected to increase, further raising the risk of accidents. May is recognized as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and Weaver-Hawkins emphasized the importance of addressing safety now.

The primary causes of these incidents include speeding by motorcyclists and other vehicles. Weaver-Hawkins also pointed out that unchecked potholes in the city contribute to road hazards.

Weaver-Hawkins stated, “These crashes that are occurring, we all play a role. They’re all preventable, but we all have to do our part.”

She urged motorcyclists to adhere to traffic rules and be vigilant, noting that swerving to avoid hazards can lead to accidents. Furthermore, visibility challenges due to small motorcycle sizes complicate safe driving for all road users.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging both riders and drivers to prioritize safety as the season progresses.
