DETROIT (Local News Wire) – A 17-year-old motorcyclist crashed after fleeing onto the Southfield Freeway following an incident involving a Michigan State Police (MSP) trooper early Tuesday morning.
According to MSP, at approximately 12:10 a.m., troopers observed the motorcyclist stopped on the Southfield Service Drive near Warren. Upon inquiry, he claimed he was practicing.
While officers were speaking with one motorcyclist, another approached, performed a wheelie, and revved his engine. Despite police activating their lights, the second motorcyclist evaded intervention and entered the northbound lanes of the Southfield Freeway.
Authorities reported that the individual attempted to overtake a vehicle but lost control and crashed. He fled on foot back to the service drive but was apprehended after a brief pursuit.
The teen sustained minor injuries and was subsequently treated at the scene before being released to his father. The case will be referred to the prosecutor’s office for potential charges.
“Reckless drivers often lack the skills to drive safely,” said MSP F/Lt. Mike Shaw. “Fortunately, he didn’t sustain serious injuries and can learn from this experience.”
