Totowa, NJ (January 5, 2026) – New Jersey State Police responded to a fatal crash involving two vehicles on Interstate 80 West near mile marker 54.2 at approximately 2:15 a.m. on January 5. At least two individuals sustained fatal injuries in the incident.
Authorities noted that emergency responders helped free multiple occupants trapped inside one of the vehicles, including a young child. Medical personnel were on-site to provide immediate assistance.
Despite lifesaving efforts, two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the victims have not yet been released. The New Jersey Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has been called to assist in the investigation.
Witnesses reported that one vehicle may have been traveling in the wrong direction prior to the collision. Law enforcement is currently reviewing evidence and conducting an ongoing investigation into the crash.
Portions of I-80 West were closed for several hours while crews cleared the area and gathered evidence. Authorities maintain that the investigation remains active.
