DEADWOOD, S.D. — Two motorcyclists from Frederick, Colorado, were killed in a collision on U.S. Highway 14A Thursday evening.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol (SDHP) reported the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. near Deadwood, involving a 2020 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a 2009 Jeep Cherokee. The 59-year-old male driver of the motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve approximately four miles east of Deadwood, crossing into oncoming traffic before colliding with the Jeep.
Both motorcycle riders sustained fatal injuries, while one occupant of the Jeep suffered minor injuries. SDHP confirmed that neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
The incident took place during the first weekend of the 86th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, drawing thousands of bikers to the area for the 10-day event.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash, which resulted in temporary lane closures on U.S. Highway 14A. Emergency services responded to the scene, and tow operations were conducted for both vehicles involved.
