Motorcycle Deaths in Louisiana Remain Unchanged.

May 2, 2013, 7:52 p.m. CT

Seven motorcyclists died in crashes in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes last year, with a mix of local and out-of-state riders impacted.

Motorcycle fatalities in these parishes remained below 10 annually, contrary to a national rise of 9 percent in 2012, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.

The state reported 69 motorcycle deaths in 2012, down from 75 in 2011, per the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

Experts attribute the difference to Louisiana’s mandatory helmet law, which is believed to save lives.

Nationwide trends indicate motorcycle fatalities increase with higher gas prices, as more people buy motorcycles during such periods.

Local rider Chuck Boudreaux, 40, of the South Side Maniacs, emphasized the joy of riding, despite dangers posed by inattentive drivers.

In Lafourche, 38 motorcyclists were injured in crashes last year, while Terrebonne reported 63 injuries, according to state safety data.

Boudreaux noted that one of the deceased, Kade Levron, was a long-time rider and an active competitor, lamenting the loss to their club.

The Governors Highway Safety Association stresses that drivers must be vigilant and respect motorcyclists’ right-of-way.

The association advises motorcyclists against speeding and emphasizes the importance of training; 35 percent of fatal motorcycle crashes involved speeding, while many did not involve other vehicles.
