One-Year-Old Child Dies in Louisiana Highway Crash; Investigation Ongoing
A crash on Louisiana Highway 80 on Sunday, April 13, resulted in the death of a one-year-old child and serious injuries to another occupant.
At approximately 1 p.m., a 27-year-old woman, Shanice Kyles, lost control of her vehicle, which veered off the roadway, striking a tree and overturning, according to Louisiana State Police. The cause of the loss of control is under investigation.
The one-year-old, Amelia Kyles, was not properly restrained and sustained severe injuries. She was transported to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. Kyles was wearing her seatbelt; however, another child in the backseat received only minor injuries and was also not properly restrained.
Authorities indicated that impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, although routine toxicology tests are being conducted due to the fatality.
Louisiana State Police urged that all occupants wear seatbelts and emphasized the importance of using child safety seats appropriate for children’s age, weight, and height. They noted that three out of four car seats are improperly installed.
The investigation remains active, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
