Sturgis Rally Sees Increased Accidents Despite Safety Efforts
STURGIS, SD — During the 2026 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the Department of Public Safety reported a notable rise in accidents, with various incidents occurring throughout the event.
According to the Department of Public Safety, as of August 14, officials recorded 95 accidents, which resulted in 15 serious injuries and 2 fatalities. The incidents primarily occurred on major roadways surrounding Sturgis, including Highway 34 and Interstate 90.
Emergency response teams, including the South Dakota Highway Patrol and local law enforcement, were on-site to assist with medical aid and traffic management. Witnesses reported heavy traffic volumes contributed to several of the accidents.
Authorities indicated that roadways were monitored closely, with multiple traffic stops and DUI checkpoints established to enhance safety for attendees. Despite these efforts, lane closures were necessary in several areas to accommodate emergency responses.
The investigation into the cause of each incident is ongoing, with public safety officials urging motorcyclists to exercise caution.
