A 19-year-old motorcyclist died Sunday in a collision with a cyclist on the Steese Highway, according to Fairbanks Police.
The motorcyclist, Aiden Cowles, was traveling southbound at the posted speed limit when the incident occurred just after 2:41 p.m. Cowles was wearing protective gear, including a helmet.
Authorities reported that Cowles entered the intersection at 10th Avenue on a green light. The cyclist, who allegedly entered against the traffic signal, collided with Cowles’ motorcycle, causing him to lose control.
Witnesses indicated the cyclist got up after the crash and fled the scene on foot. Police had been searching for information regarding the cyclist’s identity, which was confirmed as of Tuesday morning.
As of now, the cyclist has not been charged with any crimes. Police stated the investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as available.
