PITT COUNTY, NC — A Greene County man was arrested Tuesday night in connection with a fatal hit-and-run involving a motorcycle on March 11.
Authorities said 25-year-old Erasto Lopez-Gomez of Snow Hill is charged with felony hit and run resulting in serious injury or death.
According to arrest warrants, Lopez-Gomez failed to provide his identification after a collision that resulted in the death of 62-year-old motorcyclist Christopher Babcock, who died from his injuries following the incident.
The crash occurred along U.S. 13 at U.S. 264 Alternate near Moye-Turnage Road, southeast of Farmville. Troopers reported that a vehicle turned left in front of Babcock’s motorcycle, causing the collision.
After the crash, the driver fled the scene towards Greene County. Last week, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol held a press conference requesting public assistance in identifying the driver.
Lopez-Gomez is currently held at the Pitt County Jail under a $2 million bond, with a court appearance scheduled for today.
In a statement, Donna Babcock expressed gratitude towards law enforcement and the community for their efforts to locate the driver, highlighting the profound grief her family is experiencing since the loss of her husband.
