A husband and wife died in a motorcycle collision with a motorhome in Crook County, Wyoming, on July 31, according to the Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred at 12:33 p.m. at milepost 170.38 on U.S. 14, approximately 15 miles north of Moorcroft. Authorities report that 84-year-old Helmut Kanoldt of Sun Lakes, California, was driving eastbound in a motorhome when he mistakenly made a U-turn into oncoming traffic.
Kanoldt pulled out in front of 69-year-old Jean Marie Godard and his wife, 75-year-old Chantal Bouvet Godard, who were traveling eastbound on a motorcycle. Witnesses reported that Jean Marie attempted to avoid the collision by steering left, but he struck the motorhome’s left front quarter panel.
Both Jean Marie and Chantal, who were wearing helmets, died at the scene. Kanoldt and his wife, 85-year-old Rose Kanoldt, were not transported for injuries.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol indicated that driver inattention may have contributed to the crash. This incident marks the fourth and fifth motorcycle fatalities on Wyoming highways this year. A full investigation is ongoing.
