Virginia Woman Graduates from VCU at 61 After 40-Year Hiatus
RICHMOND, VA—Celia Cooper, 61, celebrated her graduation from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) with a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies on May 14, 2023.
Cooper initially pursued her college education in South Carolina during the 1980s but paused her studies to prioritize her family as a military spouse and mother of four daughters. Years later, she returned to complete her degree, marking a major personal achievement.
According to VCU officials, Cooper’s journey highlights the importance of perseverance and lifelong learning. She joins a growing number of non-traditional students fulfilling academic goals later in life.
