NORTH HAVERHILL, N.H. (WCAX) – A cyclist died following a collision with a vehicle on Route 10 on May 27.
According to police, 72-year-old Joseph Miller of Haverhill was riding north when he swerved into the path of a passing car after checking for traffic. Miller was airlifted to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities characterized the incident as a tragic accident. Local cyclists are raising concerns about road safety.
“I ride that road all the time,” said Pascale Graham, a member of the Upper Valley Cycling Club. He noted that he now prefers back roads due to safety concerns, citing a recent close call with a speeding vehicle.
Julie Tilden, 81, has been cycling for years and recently experienced two crashes while avoiding passing trucks. “Drivers often aren’t focused on the road,” she stated.
Jennie Chamberlain of Hanover’s Bike-Walk Committee emphasized the risks of high-speed traffic near cyclists, describing vulnerable road users as “really dangerous.”
As cycling season approaches, New Hampshire State Police Lt. Joseph Ronchi urged both drivers and cyclists to exercise caution and share the road responsibly. “Keep a safe distance,” he advised drivers.
A celebration of life for Joseph Miller is scheduled for June 13. The investigation into the crash is ongoing; however, authorities indicate that charges are unlikely.
