COLUMBIA, MO — The trial for Matthew Shilling, 43, accused of manslaughter following a fatal crash on Business Loop 70, began Wednesday.
Shilling faces five charges in Boone County, including involuntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, assault, and driving with a revoked license. The incident occurred on Feb. 2, 2024, as a motorcycle slowed for a turn; Shilling’s truck collided with the motorcycle, pushing it into a nearby SUV.
Christina Mayfield, 32, a passenger on the motorcycle, died from injuries sustained in the crash. Her husband, Matthew Mayfield, testified that he lost consciousness during the incident and later awoke in a hospital.
The 911 dispatcher who took Shilling’s call also testified, stating that Shilling expressed remorse during the conversation, asserting he did not mean to cause the crash. A witness, driver of a vehicle in front of the Mayfields, described feeling a bump as Shilling’s truck struck the motorcycle, prompting her to call for help.
Court documents indicate no evidence showed Shilling attempted to slow down or evade the crash. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Shilling traveling at a high rate of speed. Additionally, his driving record reveals nine prior convictions for driving violations, including suspended licenses.
Jury selection took place from 8:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The trial will continue as evidence and witnesses are presented.
